Patna : New Zealand (NZ) defeated West Indies (WI) by an innings and 134 runs in the 1st test at Seddon Park, Hamilton, NZ, on Day 4 of the match with fast medium bowler Neil Wagner taking 4/66 in 13.5 overs in WI 2nd innings. WI batsman Jermaine Blackwood, however, scored 104 in 141 balls with 11 fours and 2 sixes, his 2nd test century,  while fast bowler Alzarri Joseph scored 86 in 125 balls with 9 fours and 3 sixes. Blackwood and Joseph added 155 runs for the 7th wicket. WI had won the toss but opted to bowl.

NZ had declared their first innings at 519/7 with captain Kane Williamson scoring 251, his career best score,  and opener Tom Latham scoring 86. In reply, WI were all out for 138 in their first innings with Tim Southee taking 4/35 in 19 overs. Asked to follow on WI scored 247 in their 2nd innings with Neil Wagner taking  four wickets. Wagner had also taken 2 wickets in WI first innings.

Kane Williamson was named Player Of The Match. NZ secured 60 World Test Championships points by winning the match.
