Patna : New Zealand (NZ) defeated South Africa (SA) by an innings and 276 runs in the 1st test at Hagley Oval, Christchurch, NZ, on the 3rd day of the match on February 19, 2022, as fast medium bowler Tim Southee, 33, took 5/35 in 17.4 overs, his 14th five-wicket figure,  while fellow fast medium bowlers Matt Henry and Neil Wagner took two wickets each. Fast medium bowler Kyle Jamieson also took one wicket.  Matt Henry was named Player Of The Match for taking 7 wickets and scoring an unbeaten 58 runs in the match.

Resuming at their overnight score of 34/3, NZ were all out for a paltry 111 runs in 41.4 overs to suffer a humiliating defeat. For SA, Temba Bavuma scored 41 in 73 balls with 6 fours while Kyle Verreynne (wk) scored 30 runs in 38 balls with 3 fours. Captain Dean Elgar ( opener) scored 1 in first innings and zero in second innings. SA were all out for just 95 runs in their first innings.

NZ had scored a massive 482 in 117.5 overs in their first innings with Henry Nicholls scoring 105 runs, his 8th century in tests, and Tom Blundell (wk) scoring 96 runs. Matt Henry remained unbeaten on 58 in 68 balls hitting 8 fours.
