Patna : New Zealand (NZ) demolished India by 8 wickets in WTC final at The Rose Bowl, Southampton, UK, on Day 6 on June 23, 2021, night, to become the World Test Champions.It may be mentioned here that the NZ crushed India in the final even as two entire days’ play was washed out due to rain. Fast medium bowler Kyle Jamieson was declared Player Of The Match.
Set a target of 139 runs, NZ scored 140/2 in 45.5 overs with captain Kane Williamson, who had scored 49 in first innings, scoring an unbeaten 52 in 89 balls with 8 fours and Ross Taylor scoring an unbeaten 47 in 100 balls hitting 6 fours. Taylor hit the winning four.
NZ completely outplayed India in the match particularly in batting. None of the Indian batsmen could score a fifty in the match. Cheteshwar Pujara and fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah were a huge disappointment in the match. Pujara scored 8 & 15 in the match while Bukrah failed to take any wicket. Captain Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane, the other two mainstay of the team were just slightly better.
Earlier, resuming at their overnight score of 64/2, India folded up for a paltry 170 runs in 73 overs with Rishabh Pant (wk) scoring 41 in 81 balls with 4 fours and opener Rohit Sharma scoring 30 in 81 balls. Tim Southee took 4/48 while Trent Boult took 3/39 and Kyle Jamieson 2/30. Neil Wagner took 1 wicket.
India scored 217 runs in first innings with Ajinkya Rahane scoring 49 runs and captain Kohli scoring 44 runs. NZ had scored 249 in their first innings with opener Devon Conway scoring 54 runs and captain Williamson scoring 49 runs.
