Patna : Resuming at their overnight score of 195/5, New Zealand (NZ) were all out for 285 in 106 overs in their second innings before lunch on Day 4 in the Tirst Test against Sri Lanka (SL) on August 17, 2019. The 7th NZ wicket had fallen when the score was 178. The last three NZ batsmen added 107 runs giving their team a lead of 267 runs. SL had scored 267 in their first innings with NZ spinner Ajaj Patel taking 5/89 in 33 overs.

NZ spinner William Somerville remained unbeaten on 40 in 118 balls hitting 3 fours and 2 sixes. B J Watling (wk) fell to fast bowler Lahiru Kumar for 77 when the score was 224. He added 46 runs for 8th wicket with Somerville. Fast bowler Trent also Boult fell to  Kumara for 26 making it 260/9. Somerville added 36 runs with Bout for the 9th wicket. Spinner Ajaj Patel fell to SL spinner Dhananjaya de Silva for 14.

For SL, Lasith Embuldeniya took 4/99 in 37 overs while Dhananjaya de Silva took 3/25 in 12 overs. Lahiru Kuamara took 2/31 in 10 overs while Akila Dananjaya took 1/84 in 32 overs.
