Patna : New Zealand (NZ) were all out for 251 in 95.4 overs in their first innings in the 3rd test against Australia at Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney, Australia, on Day 3 on January 5, 2020, with Glen Phillips scoring 52 in 115 balls hitting 6 fours and a six and captain Tom Latham scoring 49 in 133 balls with 4 fours. All-rounder Colin de Grandhomme was run out for 20 while spinner Tod Astle remained unbeaten on 25 in 63 balls with 4 fours. NZ failed to capitalise on the good start given by its openers.

Spinner Nathan Lyon took 5/68 in 30.4 overs while fast bowler Pat Cummins took 3/44 in 22 overs. Fast bowler Mitchell Starc took 1/57 in 21 overs.

Resuming at their overnight score of 63/0, NZ lost their first wicket that of opener Tom Blundell at 68. Blundell fell to Nathan Lyon for 34 in 105 balls with 4 fours. Opener Tom Latham and Jeet Raval added 49 runs for the 2nd wicket. Raval also fell to Lyon for 31 in 58 balls with 4 fours making it 117/2. At the same score, opener Tom Latham fell to fast bowler Pat Cumminsalso  for 49 making it 117/3.

Ross Taylor also fell to Cummins for 22 in 20 balls with 4 fours making it 145/4. B J Watling (wk) fell to Starc for 9 in 30 balls and it was 163/5. Grandhomme was run out for 20 and it was 195/6. Glen Phillips fell to Pat Cummins for 52 and it was 235/7. William Somerville fell to Lyon for a duck making it 237/8. Neil Wagner also fell to Lyon for a duck and it was 237/9.Matt Henry too fell to Lyon.

Australia are 28/0 after 9 overs in their 2nd innings with opener David Warner and Joe Burns unbeaten on 16 and 11 runs respectively. Australia lead by 231 runs.
