Patna : New Zealand (NZ) were 195/7 in 76 overs at stumps on day 3 in their second innings in the first test against Sri Lanka (SL) at Galle International Stadium, Galle, Sri Lanka, on August 16, 2019, with W J Watling ( wk) unbeaten on 63 in 128 balls hitting 5 fours and spinner William Somerville batting on 5. NZ, who had scored 249 in their first innings, lead by 177 runs.

Opener Tom Latham scored 45 while Henry Nicholls scored 26. Fast bowler Tim Southee scored 21 in 62 balls with just 1 four while captain Kane Williamson fell to spinner Lasith Embuldeniya for 4. NZ lost their first wicket that of opener Jeet Raval at 8. Raval fell to spinner Dhananjaya de Silva for 4. Latham fell to spinner Akila Dananjaya while Ross Taylor fell to Embuldeniya for 3. Nicholls fell to Dhananjaya de Silva. Mitchell Santner ( 12) and Tim Southee ( 21) fell to Embuldeniya

For SL, Embuldeniya took 4/71 in 29 overs while Dhananjaya de Silva took 2/16 in 10 overs. Akila Dananjaya took 1/56 in 24 overs.

Earlier, resuming at their overnight score of 227/7, SL were all out for 267 in 93.2 overs with Niroshen Dickwella ( wk) getting out to Somerville for 61.  Fast bowler Suranga Lakmal fell to fast bowler Trent Boult for 40. Dickwella and Lakmal added 81 runs for the 8th wicket.

For NZ, spinner Ajaj Patel took 5/89 in 33 overs while William Somerville took 3/83 in 22.2 overs. Trent BOult took 2/45 in 20 overs.
