NZ lost their first wicket that of opener Tom Latham at 18. Latham fell to Sam Curran for 8. His opening partner Jeet Raval and captain Kane Williamson then added 54 runs for the 2nd wicket. Jeet Raval fell to spinner Jack Leach for 19 in 68 balls with 3 fours making it 72/2. Ross Taylor and Williamson added 34 runs for 3rd wicket. Taylor fell to all-rounder Ben Stokes for 25 in 40 balls with 1 four making it 106/3. Williamson fell to Sam Curran for 51 in 85 balls with 7 fours and it was 127/4 in 39.4 overs.
Earlier resuming at their overnight score of 241/4, England were all out for 353 in 124 overs with Ben Stokes scoring 91 in 146 balls with 12 fours while Ollie Pope scored 29 in 56 balls with 6 fours. Stokes and Pope added 74 runs for the 5th wicket. Stokes fell to pacer Tim Southee making it 277/5. Pope also fell to Southee making it 286/6. Sam Curran also fell to Southee for a duck at the same score making it 286/7. Jofra Archer fell to fast bowler Trent Bout for 4 and it was 295/8. Jos Buttler (wk) fell to fast medium bowler Neil Wanger for 43 in 70 balls with 5 fours and a six making it 347/9. Stuard Broad also fell to Wagner for 1. Spinner Jack Leach remained unbeaten on 18 in 55 balls with 2 fours.
For NZ, Tim Southee took 4/88 in 32 overs while Neil Wagner took 3/90 in 32 overs. Colin de Granhomme took 2/41 in 23 overs while Trent Boult took 1/97 in 31 overs.
