Patna : Bihar CM Nitish Kumar on January 12 advised the chairman of Law Commission of India, Justice(retd) B S Chauhan, not to be hasty on the Uniform Civil Code. In a letter to chairman Chauhan, Nitish also refused to be drawn into controversial issue of triple talaq among Muslims. He suggested the government should consult all stakeholders of different religions.
Members of different communities have their own customs and traditions, which should not be disturbed as India is a pluralistic society, the CM said. Nitish said any hasty action on the Uniform Civil Code would cause social discord as freedom of religion was guaranteed in the constitution. He was responding to chairman ‘s letter sent to him in October last year. Nitish regretted commission wanted response of the state government by sending questionnaire only. Debate should be held on the issue, he said.
