NHRC’s month long ‘Winter Internship’ programme begins

New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission’s (NHRC) much sought after month long ‘Winter Internship Programme’ on human rights for university and college students began in New Delhi on December 19, 2017. Fortynine interns including 25 girls and 24 boys from 15 States of the country have been shortlisted to attend this programme.

The aim of the internship is to raise awareness among the students about human rights and sensitise them on various related issues. Inaugurating the programme, Justice P C Ghose, Member, NHRC, expressed hope that the interns would proactively engage themselves in learning various aspects related to human rights to make the best use of this internship, according to an NHRC release.

Jyotika Kalra, Member, NHRC, said that the outcome of their exposure to human rights related issues will be more fruitful, if they proactively take up the cause of human rights violations and raise voices against them and register complaints with the Commission and other appropriate forums for justice.

Ambuj Sharma, Secretary General, NHRC, said that the Commission has entered into silver jubilee year of its existence and it would be keen to know from the young minds about their ideas on how to expand the outreach of the NHRC, India, particularly in the far flung areas . He said that since the interns come from the different parts of the country, it would be useful for the Commission to know about their perspectives on human rights and issues related to them facing different regions.

During the internship programme, the students will be addressed by domain experts through interactive sessions. They will also be taken for visits to police stations, prisons, NGOs working in the field of human rights for exposure to various practical aspects relating to human rights
