Patna : New Zealand defeated West Indies by 240 runs in the second test at Seddon Park, Hamilton, New Zealand, in the third session on the fourth day on December 12, 2017, to wrap up the two-match test series 2-0. New Zealand had won the first test by at Wellington by an innings and 67 runs.

Set a target of 444 to win the second test, the West Indies folded for 203/9 with Sunil Ambris retired hurt following a hostile spell of fast bowling by Neil Wagner, who was the pick of the Black Caps bowlers taking 3/42. Trent Boult took 2/52 reaching 200th test wickets. Tim Southee took 2/71. Spinner Mitchell Santner also took two wickets. West Indies had made 221 in the first innings. New Zealand had made 373 in their first innings and 291/8 in the second.

West Indies batsman Sunil Ambris retired hurt on 5 with his team on 80/4 after a Wagner delivery hit him on the wrist though he stayed on the pitch for a while. He was diagnosed with a fracture at hospital. Wagner had taken 9 wickets in the first test at Wellington including 7/39 in the first innings.

Resuming at their overnight score of 30/2, West Indies soon lost their stand in Captain and opener Kraigg Brathwaite for 20. Shane Dowrich was out for zero to Wagner, who also took the wicket of Shai Hope( 21). Roston Chase made 64 while Raymon Reifer made 29 putting on a 78 run stand. Wagner took the wicket of Chase.

Fast bowler Kemar Roach scored 32 and was out to spinner Mitchell Santner, who also took the wicket of Miguel Cummins (9). Former New Zealand skipper Ross Taylor, who hit his 17th ton in the test, was declared Man of the Match.
