Patna : Nea Zealand (NZ) beat Sri Lanka (SL) by an innings and 65 runs in the 2nd test at P Sara Oval, Colombo, Sri Lanka, on Day 5 on August 26, 2019, to level the two-match test series 1-1. New Zealand had declared their first innings at 431/6 with opener Tom Latham scoring 154, B J Watling (wk) 105, and all-rounder Colin de Grandhomme 83.

Opting to bat after winning the toss, SL scored 244 in their first innings, and 122 in their second innings with Niroshen Dickwella (wk) scoring 51 and captain Dumuth Karunaratne 21.

SL made a disastrous start to their second inning losing both their openers : Lahiru Thirimanne and Kusal Perera, with only 4 runs on board. Thirimanne was run out for zero while Kusal Perera fell to Trent Boult for zero. They lost their 3rd wicket at 11 when Angelo Mathew fell to Colin de Grandhomme for 7 and the 4th wicket .at 22 when Dhananjaya de Silva, who had scored 109 in the first innings, fell to spinner Ajaj Patel for 1. Kusal Mendis fell to spinner William Somerville for 20 making it 32/5. Captain Dimuth Karunaratne fell to fast bowler Tim Southee for 21 and it was 73/6.

For NZ, Tim Southee took 2/15 and Trent Boult 2/17. Spinner Ajaj Patel took 2/31 in 19 overs while William Somerville took 2/49 in 21 overs. Colin de Grandhomme took 1/8 in 4 overs. Southee took six wickets in the match while Boult took 5 wickets.
