Patna : Railway minister Suresh Prabhu has launched a new system for cancellation of confirmed train tickets booked at passenger reservation counters ( PRS ) through phone call or by sending SMS to 139. Claim for refund for the cancelled journey ticket amount can also be made through phone calls or SMS.

IRCTC chairman cum managing director ( CMD) A K Manocha said passengers have to dial 139 and select option 6 from the main menu of interactive voice recorder system ( IVRS ).They will get a one –time password ( OTP) to process cancellation of tickets. Passengers are then required to reach the PRS counter within the stipulated time to get refund money of their tickets without facing any hassle, he said adding this facility is available in the case of the confirmed tickets’ cancellation and not in case of late running of trains or cancellation of trains for any other reasons.

Monacha said online cancellation through 139 is allowed only up to four hours before the scheduled departure of the train while refund of the amount can be collected at the journey commencing station or nearby satellite PRS locations as defined by the zonal railways in each state.Besides, passengers can also cancel confirmed tickets through SMS by sending PNR number and train number to 139. ‘ Users will get OTP number which is to be entered for cancelling confirmed tickets. Thus passengers need not rush to PRS counters to cancel their confirmed tickets, he said .

IRCTC CMD said this facility is for those passengers who have furnished their cellphone numbers at the time of booking journey tickets. Railways would not give refund of the cancelled tickets after the expiry of the stipulated time. In any case passengers must follow the time limit to get refund of the tickets, he said adding cancellation of confirmed tickets is a phone call away now.

Manocha said such a facility is likely to help passengers in cancelling their confirmed tickets and getting refund. IRCTC will introduce a new page on its website (www.irctc.co.in) without any login for cancellation of counter tickets. They need to enter PNR number and train number on the website along with ‘captcha’ . An OTP will be sent to the passenger on his/ her mobile number for cancellation. Refund amount will also be displayed to the passenger on the website, he said.

Giving much relief to Non Resident Indians ( NRI) and foreign tourists , IRCTC will now accept any international credit or debit card on its portal through payment gateway provided by Atom Technologies. So far, IRCTC was accepting only American Express international credit cards on the IRCTC portal. This facility will benefit about 3.56 lakh registered international users and NRIs who book tickets for themselves and family members during their journey in the country.
