National Sports University being set up in Manipur

New Delhi : The only National Sports University (NSU) in the country is being set up in Manipur.  The stage of requirement of coaches in NSU has not yet come.  NSU is presently running two Under-Graduate and one Post-Graduate degree programmes which do not require coaches.

The Central Government does not appoint coaches for States.  Sports Authority of India (SAI) has 882 regular and 126 contract coaches are at present working for training facilities.

Development of coaches and improving their competency is an ongoing process.  The Central Government is supporting NSFs under Human Resource Development Scheme (HRDS) for improving competency of Indian coaches. In the Annual Calendar for Training and Competitions (ACTC) meetings with various National Sports Federations (NSFs). it has been impressed upon them to work out appropriate training competency and upgradation programmes of Indian coaches. National Institute of Sports, Patiala, and National Sports University, Manipur, are running academic programmes for developing coaches.

The Government has taken a decision to set up National Centre for Sports Science and Research (NCSSR). This Information was given by the Minister of State (I/C)  Kiren Rijiju in written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha on July 1, 2019, according to a PIB release.
