Patna : Top seed and winner of 19 Grand Slam titles Rafael Nadal, 33, Spain, 2014 champion Stan Wawrinka, 34, Switzerland, World No 17 Karen Khachanov, 23, Russia, and World No 30 Pablo Carreno Busta, 28, Spain, advanced to the second round of Australian Open (AO) 2020 at Melbourne Park, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, on January 21, 2020. Nadal has won 84 career titles.

World No 1 Rafael Nadal crushed World No 73 Hugo Dellien, 26, Bolivia, in straight sets 6-2, 6-3, 6-0 at Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne Park, on January 21. Nadal, the 2009 champion here, won 8  break points in the match to 2 by Dellien. Nadal also won 8 games in a row to 2 by the Bolivian. The Spaniard also fired 5 Aces in the match. Nadal’s winning percentage both on his first and second serve ( 70 % & 73%) was much higher than that of Dellien’s (50 % & 35 %). Nadal won 47 service points to 40 by Dellien. Nadal, however, also committed 5 double faults to 2 by his opponent.

World No 15 Stan Wawrinka beat World No 92 Damir Dzumhur, 27, Bosnia & Herzegovina, in four-sets 7-5, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 to enter the 2nd round. Wawrinka hammered 21 Aces in the match to just 1 by Dzumhur. He also broke Dzumhur’s service three times in the match. Both the players won 3 games each in a row in the match. The Swiss won 93 service points to 89 by Dzumhur.

Karen Khachanov, the 16th seed, beat qualifier Mario Vilella Martinez, 24, Spain, in four-sets 4-6, 6-4, 7-6, 6-3 in first round rallying back from one set down. Khachanov fired 10 Aces in the match to 6 by Martinez. He won two break points to 1 by Martinez. Both the players won 3 games each in a row. The Russian won 89 service points to 86 by Martinez.

Pablo Carreno Busta, the 27th seed, beat Jozef Kovalik, 27, Slovakia, in four-sets 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 in first round. Busta broke Kovalik’s service 4 times in the match. Kovalik broke Busta’s service twice. Busta hammered 12 Aces in the match to 8 by Kovalik. The Spaniard wonb 5 games in a row in the match to 3 by his opponent.
