Nadal, Medvedev, Zverev, Lopez & Wawrinka enter US Open 3rd round

Patna :  World No 5 Daniil Medvedev, Russia, World No 6 Alexander Zverev, Germany, and World No 61 Feliciano Lopez, Spain, entered the 3rd round of US Open at New York City, New York, USA, on August 29, 2019, late night. World No 2 and three-time champion Rafael Nadal, Spain, also entered  the 3rd round on August 30, 2019, early morning, after his second round opponent and World No 203 Thanasi Kokkinakis, 23, Australia, retired before the match. Nadal will face World No 170 Hyeon Chung, 23, South Korea, in 3rd round on August 31, 2019.

Medvedev, who recently won the ATP Cincinnati Masters title, beat World No 84 Hugo Dellien, 26, Bolivia,  in four-sets in 2nd round firing 16 Aces. Medvedev defeated Dellien 6-3, 7-5, 5-7, 6-3. The Russian won 9 break points to 6 by Dellien. Both the players won 3 games each in a row in the match.

Zverev, 22,  edged past World No 45 Frances Tiafoe, 21, USA, in a five-set slugfest. Zverev beat Tiafoe 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 to enter the 3rd round. The German fired 22 Aces in the match to 6 by Tiafoe. Zverev won 4 break points in the match to 3 by the American. Zverev won 98 service points to 83 by the American. Zverev also committed 11 double faults to2 by Tiafoe.

Feliciano Lopez, 37, beat World No 59 Yoshihito Nishioka, 23, Japan, 6-7, 6-0, 6-4, 6-4 in second round. Lopez fired 27 Aces in the match to 6 by Nishioka. The Spaniard also won 6 break points in the match to just 1 by Nishioka. Lopez won 6 games in a row in the match to 2 by Nishioka. Lopez, however, aalso committed 9 double faults to 6 by Nishioka. Lopez will face Medvedev in 3rd round on August 31, 2019.

World No 24 and 2016 champion Stan Wawrinka, 34, Switzerland, beat World No 74 Jeremy Chardy, 32, France, 6-4, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 to enter the 3rd round breaking the latter’s service thrice in the match. Wawrinka also fired 19 Aces in the match to 9 by Chardy. The Swiss also won 3 games in a row in the match. Wawrinka won 90 service points to 83 by the French. Wawrinka will face World No 135 Paolo Lorenzi, 37, Italy, in 3rd round.

World No 69 Pablo Carreno Busta, 28, Spain, beat World No 68 Ricardas Berankis, 29, Lithuania, 6-4, 6-7, 6-2, 6-0 to enter the 3rd round. Both the players fired 5 Aces each in the match. But, the Spaniard won 8 break points in the match to 2 by Berankis. Busta also won 9 games in a row in the match to 3 by Berankis. Both the players committed 6 double faults each.

World No 18 Nikoloz Basilashvilli, 27, Georgia, beat qualifier and World No 394 Jenson Brooksby, 18, USA, 3-6, 7-6, 7-5, 6-2 to advance to the 3rd round. Basilashvilli won 9 break points to 7 by Jenson. The American hammered 8 Aces in the match to 5 by the Georgia. Basilashvilli also committed 15 double faults in the match to 5 by Jenson. Both the players won 5 games each in a row.

World No 80 Aljaz Bedene, 30, Slovenia, upset World No 26 Benoit Paire, 30, France, in a five-set marathon 4-6, 6-7, 6-2, 7-5, 7-6 coming from behind. Bedene fired 15 Aces in the match while Paire hammered 16 Aces. Bedene won 6 break points to 4  by Paire. Bedene won 128 service points to 112 by the French. Paire committed 21 double faults in the match to 13 by Bedene, who will face Zverev in 3rd round.
