Patna : Top seed Rafael Nadal, 33, Spain, 5th seed John Isner, 34, USA, 7th seed Grigor Dimitrov, 28, Bulgaria, and World No 35 Taylor Fritz, 22, USA, marched into semi-finals of Mexican Open, an ATP World Tour 500 tennis tournament played on hard courts at Acapulco, Mexico, on February 28, 2020.
World No 2 & two-time former champion Rafael Nadal crushed World No 76 Kwon Soon-woo, 22, South Korea, in quarter-finals 6-2, 6-1 in 1hr 31 minutes breaking the latter’s service 4 times in the match twice each in both the sets. Kwon got 8 created 8 break point opportunities but to convert any of them. Nadal, on the other hand, converted four of his six break point opportunities. In the sixth game of second set, Kwon was leading 40 love on his serve but allowed a dominant Nadal to claw back to make it deuce and then win the game to make it 5-1. Nadal held his serve in the next game to win the set and match.
World No 20 John Isner beat World No 66 Tommy Paul, 22, USA, 7-6, 3-6, 6-2 in quarter-finals in 1hr 59 minutes to enter the semi-finals. Isner hammered 22 Aces in the match to 3 by Paul, who had stunned 2nd seed Alexander Zverev, 22, Germany, in 2nd round. Isner, however, also committed 4 double faults. He won 2 break points to 1 by Paul. Isner won 4 games in a row in the match to 3 by Paul. Isner, in all, won 95 points to 84 by Paul.
World No 22 Grigor Dimitrov beat World No 16 Stan Wawrinka, 34, Switzerland, in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 in 84 minutes to enter the semi-finals. The Bulgarian won 3 break points to 1 by the Swiss. Dimitrov won 3 games in a row to 1 by Wawrinka. The Bulgarian though committed 3 double faults to 1 by Wawrinka. The Swiss fired 3 Aces to 1 by Dimitrov. The Bulgarian won 64 points to 51 by the Swiss. Dimitrov will face Nadal in SFs.
World No 35 Taylor Fritz beat World No 44 Kyle Edmund, UK, 6-4, 6-3 to reach the semi-finals. Fritz fired 11 Aces in the match to 5 by the Brit. The American won 5 break points to 3 by Edmund. Fritz won 3 games in a row in the match to 2 by the Brit. Fritz won 72 points to 63 by Edmund. Fritz will face compatriot Isner in SFs on February 29, 2020.
