Patna : Top seed Rafael Nadal, 33, Spain, 2nd seed Alexander Zverev, 22, Germany, 5th seed John Isner, 34, USA, and 8th seed Dsan Lajovic, 29, Serbia, entered the second round of Mexican Open, an STP World Tour 500 tennis tournament at Acapulco, Mexico, on February 26, 2020.
World No 2 Rafael Nadal beat compatriot and World No 54 Pablo Andujar, 34, in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 in 90 minutes in first round firing 4 Aces. He won 5 break points to 2 by Andujar. Nadal won 9 games in a row in the match 2 by Andujar. Nadal, in all, won 60 points to 41 by Andujar. Nadal, who had lost in 2nd round of the tournament in 2019, also committed 23 unforced errors though. Andujar broke Nadal in the opening game but thereafter the latter was all over him. Nadal will face World No 50 Miomir Kecmanovic, 20, Serbia, in second round on February 27.
World No 7 Alexander Zverev beat World No 119 Jason Jung, 30, Taiwan, 7-6, 6-1 in 72 minutes firing 12 Aces to enter the 2nd round. Zverev though committed 8 double faults to 2 by Jung. The German won 4 break points to 2 by Jung. He won 6 games in a row to 3 by Jung. The German, in all, won 64 points to 48 by Jung. Zverev will face qualifier & World No 66 Tommy Paul, 22, USA, in 2nd round on February 27.
World No 20 John Isner beat World No 257 Mischa Zverev, 32, Germany, elder brother of Alexander Zverev, 6-3, 7-6 in first round winning 1 break point and 3 games in a row. The American hammered 22 Aces in the match to 3 by the German. Isner, in all, won 60 points to 48 by the German. Isner will face compatriot & World No 115 Marcos Giron, 26, in 2nd round on February 27.
World No 24 Dusan Lajovic beat World No 73 Steve Johnson, 30, USA, in a three-set thriller 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 rallying back from one set down in first round. Lajovic fired 11 Aces in the match to 7 by Johnson. Both the players committed 4 double faults each in the match. The Serbian won 5 break points to 3 by the American. Lajovic also won 5 games in a row in the match to 3 by Johnson. He will face S Kwon, South Korea, in 2nd round.
World No 19 Felix Auger-Aliassime, 19, Canada, beat World No 137 Alex Bolt, 27, Australia, 6-3, 7-6 in first round winning 1 break point and 3 games in a row. Aliassime, the 4th seed, fired 10 Aces in the match to 5 by the Australian. The Canadian, however, committed 7 double faults to 3 by Bolt.
World No 43 Ugo Humbert, 21, France, entered the 2nd round after defending champion and World No 23 Nick Kyrgios, 24, Australia, retired due to injury in second set trailing 3-6.
