Patna : World No 5 Garbine Muguruza, 28, Spain, beat reigning French Open champion & World No 3 Barbora Krejcikova, 25, Czech Republic, in a three-set thriller ina Group stage match at Akron WTA Finals at Panamerican Tennis Center, Zapopan, Guadalajara, Mexico, on November 13, 2021.

Muguruza, who had lost her first Group stage match to World No World No 4 Karolina Pliskova, 29, Czech Republic, defeated Krejcikoca 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 in 2hr 10 minutes rallying back from one set down. Both the players won 4 break points each during the match. Krejcikova though won 5 games in a row during the match to 3 by Muguruza. The Czech also fired 8 Aces in the match to 6 by the Spaniard. Krejcikova committed 4 double faults during the match to 3 by Muguruza, who had won French Open title in 2016 and Wimbledon title in 2017.  The Spaniard won 89 points in the match to 88 by Krejcikova.

In another Group stage match on November 13, 2021, World No 8 Anett Kontaveit, 25, Estonia, defeated World No 4 Karolina Pliskova, Czech Republic, in straight sets 6-4, 6-0 in just 57 minutes winning 4 break points and 8 games in a row during the match . Kontaveit fired 6 Aces during the match to 4 by Karolina. The Estonian, in all, won 56 points in the match to 36 by Karolina. Kontaveit had defeated Krejcikova in her first Group stage match on November 11, 2021.
