Monfils upsets Medvedev to reach final of ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament

Patna : World No 33 in ATP rankings Gael Monfils, 32, France, upset World No 16 and 5th seed Daniil Medvedev, 22, Russia, to reach the final of ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament, an ATP 500 points event, at Rotterdam played on hard courts, Netherlands, on February 16, 2019.

A resurgent Monfils beat Medvedev, who had won ATP Sofia Open singles title in Bulgaria on February 10, 2019, in a three-set thriller 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the semi-finals in 2hr 8 minutes. Monfils won 5 break points to 4 by Medvedev. Both the players won 3 games each in a row in the match. Monfils served 4 Aces while Medvedev served 5 Aces. But, Monfils’ winning percentage on his second serve (73%) was much higher than that of Medvedev (35%). Monfils though committed 5 double faults to 3 by his rival.

Medvedev had beaten Monfils in the semi-finals of ATP Sofia Open at Sofia, Bulgaria, on February 9, 2019.
