Patna : Second seed Daniil Medvedev, 25, Russia, edged past 9th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime, 21, Canada, in a five-set marathon lasting 4 hrs 41 minutes in men’s singles quarter-final rallying back from two-sets down to reach Australian Open (AO) semi-finals on January 26, 2022, for the second successive year. Medvedev will face 4th seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, 23, Greece, in semi-final.
Reigning US Open champion Medvedev beat World No 9 Aliasime 6-7, 3-6, 7-6, 7-5, 6-4 on Rod Laver Area, Melbourne Park, Australia, surviving a major scare. The Russian lost the first two sets but rallied back to win the next three sets to advance to the semi-finals Both the players won 1 tie-break each during the match. Medvedev won 3 break points during the match to 2 by the Canadian.
Aluasimme, however, hammered 18 Aces during the match to 15 by the Russian World No 2. Medvedev committed 9 dounle faults during the match to 4 by Aliassime. Both the players won 182 points each during the match. The Canadian won 4 games in a row in the match to 3 by Medvedev. Aliassime won 66 receiving points to 52 by Medvedev, the winner of 13 career titles. Aliassime’s winning percentage on his first serve ( 78%) was better than that Medvedev’s ( 75 %). But, the Russian’swinning percentage on his second serve ( 58%) was better that of Aliassime’s (53%).

World No 4 Tsitsipas beat 11th seed Jannik Sinner, 20, Italy, in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 in firstĀ quarter-final winning 4 break points and 5 games in a row during the match to reach AO semi-finals for the third time. The Greek, in all, won 80 points in the match to 64 points by the Italian. Both the players fired 4 Aces each during the match.
