Patna : Top seed Daniil Medvedev, 25, Russia; World No 30 John Isner, 36, USA; and World No 32 Reilly Opelka, 23, USA, have reached the semi-finals of National Bank Open ( Canadian Open), an ATP Masters 1,000 points hard court tournament, at Toronto, Canada, on August 14, 2021.
World No 2 Medvedev beat 7th seed Hubert Hurkacz, 24, Poland, in a three-set thriller lasting 2hr 16 minutes in quarter-finals. Medvedev defeated World No 13 Hurkacz 2-6, 7-6, 7-6 rallying back from one set down. The Russian hammered 23 Aces during the match to 9 by the Pole. Hurkacz though won 2 break points to none by the Russian. But, Medvedev won both the tiebreaks. The Russian, however, committed 5 double faults to 1 by the Pole. Hurkacz won 5 games in a row to 3 by Medvedev. The Russian will face John Isner in semi-final on August 15, 2021.
Isner upset World No 22 Gael Monfils, 34, France, in straight sets 7-6, 6-4 in quarter-final in 1hr 33 minutes. Isner fired 13 Aces in the match to 12 by Monfils. The frenchman, however, committed 10 double faults in the match to 2 by the American, who won 1 break point besides 3 games in a row during the match. Isner, in all, won 75 points in the match to 65 by Monfils.
Opelka defeated 10th seed Roberto Bautista Agut, 33, Spain, 6-3, 7-6 in quarter-final in 1 hr 23 minutes on August 13, 2021, late night. Opelka hammered 18 Aces in the match to 6 by the Spaniard. Opelka also won a break point during the match besides winning a tiebreak. The American also won 3 games in a row during the match. Opelka will face 3rd seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, 23, Greece, in semi-final on August 15, 2021.
