Patna : Second seed and defending champion Daniil Medvedev, 25, Russia, defeated 3rd seed Alexander Zverev, 24, Germany, in a three-set marathon lasting 2hr 35 minutes in a Group stage match in season-ending Nitto ATP Finals at Turin, Italy, on November 16, 2021, night.
It was Medvedev’s second win in Group Stage. H ehad defeated 7th seed Hubert Hurkacz, 24, Poland, in three-sets on November 14, 2021, in his first Group stage match.
Both Medvedev and Zverev won 1 tie-break each during the match. World No 2 Medvedev won the first 6-3 but Zverev rallied back strongly to win the second set tie-break. Medvedev fought back and won the third set tie-break in a tough contest. Medvedev was intially trailing in the 3rd set tie-break.
World No 3 Zverev hammered 18 Aces during the match to 14 by Medvedev, who won 1 break point. The Russian also won 3 games in a row during the match. Medvedev, in all, won 112 points during the match to 104 points by Zverev, who had got a walkover in his first Group stage match on November 15, 2021, as his opponent & 6th seed Matteo Berrettini, 25, Italy, retired due to injury after the first game in second set after losing losing the first set.
