Patna: World No 35 in WTA rankings Ekaterina Makarova, Russia, roared past World No 2 and reigning Australian Open Champion Caroline Wozniacki, 27, Denmark, in the second round of Wimbledon tennis championship 2018 causing a major upset. Makarova beat Wozniacki 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 in the second round. Makarova fired 7 Aces to just 4 by Wozniacki. Wozniacki had reached 4th round at Wimbledon in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2014, 2015, and 2017.

World No 8 Karolina Pliskova, 26, Czech Republic, entered the third round defeating Victoria Azarenka, 28, Belarus, 6-3, 6-3 in the second round. Both the players two Aces each in the match but Pliskova won three break points too. Azarenka had won Australian Open singles title in 2012 and 2013 and reached semi-finals at Wimbledon in 2011 and 2012.

Former champion Serena Williams, the 25th seed, also entered 3rd round defeating Viktoriya  Tomova, 23, Bulgaria, 6-1, 6-4 in the 2nd round. Her elder sister and former champion also entered the 3rd round defeating Alexandra Dulgheru, 29, Romania, in the second round in three sets 4-6, 6-0, 6-1.
