Patna : World Number 22 in Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) rankings Kyle Edmund, 23, UK, shocked World Number 12 and winner 12 Grand Slam singles titles Novak Djokovic, 30, Serbia, in the second round of Madrid Open ATP Masters 1000 in a three-set contest on May 9, 2018, at La Caga Magica, Madrid, Spain. Edmund defeated Djokovic, the 10th seed and twice winner of the event, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, to enter the Round of 16. Edmund had reached semi-finals of Australian Open 2018.

Djokovic had also made early exit in Indian Wells and Monte Carlo Masters 1000 and  Barcelona Open. Former World Number 1 Djokovic had defeated World Number 20 Kei Nishikori, Japan, 7-5, 6-4, in the first round in the Madrid Open.

World Number 10 David Goffin, Belgium, entered the Round of 16 defeating World Number 44 Robin Hass, Netherland, 7-5, 6-3, in the second round. Philipp Kohlschreiber, 34, Germany, defeated World Number 14 Roberto Bautista Agut, 29, Spain, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, to enter the Round of 16. World Number 47 Pablo Cuevas, Uruguay, defeated World Number 42 Albert Ramos-Vinolas, Spain, 6-1, 6-7, 6-2, in the second round to enter Round of 16.
