Patna : World No 8 Petra Kvitová, 29, Czech Republic, World No 15 Sofia Kenin, 21, USA, and World No 78 Ons Jabeur, Tunisia, entered the quarter-finals of Australian Open (AO) on January 26, 2020.

Two-time former Wimbledon Champion Petra Kvitová beat World No 23 Maria Sakkari, 24, Greece, in a three-set thriller 6-7, 6-3, 6-2 in 4th round at Rod laver Arena battling back from one set down. Kvitová, the 2019 AO finalist, won 8 break points in the match to 4 by Sakkari, the 22nd seed. She also won 6 games in a row in the match to 2 by the Greek. Kvitová fired 5 Aces in the match to 3 by Sakkari. Both the players committed 6 double faults each in the match. Kvitová had won Wimbledon title in 2011 and 2014.

Sofia Kenin beat teenage sensation Cori Coco Gauff, 15, USA, in a three-set encounter 6-7, 6-3, 6-0 in 4th round coming back from one set down at Melbourne Area ending the latter’s giant killing run. World No 67 Gauff had routed defending champion and World No 4 Naomi Osaka, 22, Japan, in 3rd round on January 24, 2020.

Kenin won 5 break points in the match to 1 by Gauff. Kenis also won 7 games in a row in the match to 3 by Gauff. The World No 15 Kenin won 60 service points to 52 by Gauff. Unseeded Gauff though fired 7 Aces in the match just 1 by compatriot Kenin.

Ons Jabeur, 25, beat 27th seed Qiang Wang, China, in straight sets 7-6, 6-1 in 4th round . Jabeur won 4 break points in the match to 2 by Wang. She also won 7 games in a row to 4 by the Chinese. The Tunisian won 41 service points to 38 by World No 29 Wang, who had stunned winner of 23 Grand Slam titles Serena Williams in three-sets in 3rd round . Jabeur will face Sofia Kenin in QFs on January 28, 2020.
