Kin of prisoner vandalise Gopalganj Sadar Hospital prisoners’ ward, 2 cops injured

Gopalganj: Two policemen sustained injuries when the relatives of a prisoner ransacked the prisoners’ ward at Gopalganj Sadar Hospital and had scuffle with the cops deputed there late November 2 evening. Police later arrested a relative of the prisoner in this connection.

Police said that one Daya Kumar Mahto, a native of ward number-4 at Sareya locality under Town police station, was arrested on charge of theft on November 2 and later he was forwarded to Gopalganj divisional jail at Chanave in the evening. Mahto’s condition deteriorated in the jail and he was shifted to Gopalganj Sadar Hospital for treatment in the evening. The jail officials also informed the prisoner’s family members about it.

Police said that the family members thought that Mahto had died and they reached Sadar Hospital and demanded immediate presence of the arrested person. Before the cops could respond to their demand, they created ruckus at  the hospital and even attacked the cops deputed there.

On getting information, a police team from Town police station led by its SHO Santosh Kumar reached there and arrested Mahto’s brother Sonu Kumar in this connection. The other family members fled from the hospital premises.

When contacted, Gopalganj Civil Surgeon Dr Madheshwar Prasad said that Mahto was not keeping well before he was arrested. He said that the family members damaged some property at the hospital.
