Patna : World No 4 Karolina Pliskova, 29, Czech Republic, and World No 5 Garbine Muguruza, 28, Spain, won their respective Group stage matches at season-ending Akron WTA Finals at Zaopan, Guadalajara, Mexico, on November 15, 2021. The tournament is being played on indoor hard courts.
Pliskova beat World No 3 & reigning French Open champion Barbora Krejikoca, 25, Czech Republic, in a close three-set contest 0-6, 6-4, 6-4 in 2hr 7 minutes rallying back from one set down.Krejcikova had won the first set 6-0 but lost the next two sets to Pliskova. Krejcikova won 4 break points during the match to 3 by Karolina.
Karolina hammered 11 Aces during the match to 4 by Krejcikova. Karolina, however, also committed 12 double faults to 8 by Krejcikova. The French Open champion won 6 games in a row during the match to 5 by Karolina. Krejcikova,in all, won 92 points in the match to 86 points by Karolina. Muguruza, who had lost her first Group stage match to Karolina Pliskova on Nvember 11, 2021, defeated World No 8 Anett Kontaveit, 25, Estonia, in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 in 1hr 27 minutes on November 15, 2021, winning 2 break points and 3 games in a row during the match. The Spaniard, who had won French Open title in 2016 and Wimbledon title in 2017, fired 7 Aces in the match to 2 by the Estonian.
Both the players committed 3 double faults each during the match.Muguruza, in all, won 67 points to 58 points by Kontaveit. It was Muguruza’s second win in the tournament. She had defeated World No 3 Barbora Krejcikova, Czech Republic, onovember 13, 2021.
