Patna : Italy beat old rival and three-time champion Spain 4-2 in penalty shootout at Wembley Stadium, London, UK, on July 6, 2021, night, to reach the final of UEFA Euro 2020 for the fourth time. The two team had remained locked 1-1 after the regular time and even in extra time forcing a shootout. This was the 10th occasion when the two team competed in penalty shootout at a major tournament. Italy’s Jorginho scored the decisive penalty for his country.
Federico Chiesa scored goal for 1968 champion Italy in 60th minute while Spain’s Alvaro Morata scored the equaliser in 80th minute. Italy’s goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma,22, saved a penalty of Spain’s Morata while his teammate Dani Olmo missed the target.
Two Italian players were shown Yellow Cards during the match. One Spain player was also shown Yellow Card. Italy played 17 fouls during the match to 18 by Spain.
Spain, the 2010 FIFA World Cup Champion, had defeated Italy 4-0 in 2012 UEFA Euro 2012. But, Italy defeated Spain 2-0 in 2016 in Round of 16.
