Patna : India were 144/4 in 65 overs at stumps on Day 3 in their 2nd innings in 1st Test against New Zealand (NZ) at Basin Reserve, Wellington, NZ, on February 23, 2020, with vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane unbeaten on 25 in 67 balls hitting 4 fours and Hanuma Vihari unbeaten on 15 in 70 balls with 2 fours. Rahane and Vihari have added 31 runs in 118 balls in their unbroken partnership for the 5th wicket. NZ fast bowler Trent Boult has taken 3/27 in 16 overs while Tim Southee has taken 1/41 in 15 overs. India still trail by 39 runs.
India lost their first wicket in second innings at 27 when opener Prithvi Shaw fell to Trent Boult for 14 with 2 fours. Opener Mayank Agarwal and Cheteswar Pujara added 51 runs for the 2nd wicket. Pujara fell to Boult for 11 in 81 balls making it 78/2. Mayank Agarwal fell to Southee for 58 in 99 balls with 7 fours and a six and it was 96/3. Captain Virat Kohli, who had scored 2 in first innings, fell to Boult for 19 in 43 balls with 3 fours and it was 113/4. Kohli’s flop show in New Zealand continues and is major cause of concern for Team India. India had scored 165 in their first innings
Earlier, resuming at their overnight score of 216/5, NZ were all out for 348 in 100.2 overs in their second innings with fast bowler Ishant Sharma taking 5/68 in 26 overs and spinner Ravichandran Ashwin taking 3/99 in 29 overs. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Shami took one wicket each.
NZ lost their 6th wicket that of B J Watling (wk) at 216 itself. Watling fell to Jasprit Bumrah for 14. Tim Southee fell to Sharma for 6 and it was 225/7. But, all-rounder Colin de Grandhomme and fast bowler Kyle Jamieson then turned the match around with their 71 run partnership for the 8th wicket. Jamieson fell to Ashwin for 44 in 45 balls with 1 four and 4 sixes. It was 296/8. Colin de Grandhomme fell to Ashwin for 43 in 74 balls with 5 fours and it was 310/9. Trent Boult and spinner Ajaz Patel then added 38 runs for the last wicket with the former scoring all the runs. Boult fell to Sharma for 38 in 24 balls with 5 fours and a six.
