New Delhi : A total of 18,222 new Covid-19 cases were recorded in India in last 24 hours taking the tally of cases recorded so far to 1,04,31,639 in the country at 8 am on January 9, 2021. On the other hand, 19,253 Covid-19 patients were declared cured /discharged in last 24 hours in India taking the tally to 1,00,56,651 on January 9, 2021, exceeding the number of active cases (2,24,190) by a massive margin of 98,32,461.

The active cases accounted for only 2.15% of the total cases ( 1,04,31,639) in India on January 9, 2021, a drop of 1,259 cases in last 24 hours. Of the 1,04,31,639 Covid-19 recorded in India so far, altogether 1,00,56,651 patients have been declared cured with the recovery rate being 96.41%, according to Union Health Ministry figure.

The Covid-19 toll climbed to 1,50,798 on January 9, 2021, with 228 new deaths being recorded in the country in last 24 hours including 73 in Maharashtra, 23 in Kerala, 21 in West Bengal, 17 in Uttar Pradesh, 15 in Chhattisgarh, 15 in Punjab, 10 in Delhi, 9 in Madhya Pradesh, 8 in Tamilnadu, 7 in Uttarakhand, 4 in Bihar, 4 in J&K, 3 in Gujarat, 3 in Haryana, 3 in Karnataka, 2 in Jharkhand, and 1 in in Andhra Pradesh. India had recorded 234 new deaths on January 8, 2021.

COVID-19 death toll in India on January 9, 2021, was : Maharashtra (49,970), Tamilnadu (12,208), Karnataka (12,134), Delhi (10,654), Andhra Pradesh (7,127), Uttar Pradesh (8,469), West Bengal (9,902), Gujarat (4,335), Madhya Pradesh (3,691), Rajasthan (2,727),  Punjab (5,437), Telengana (1,563), J&K (1,907), Haryana (2,943), Bihar (1,428), Odisha (1,890), Jharkhand (1,043), Assam (1,059), Uttarakhand (1,562), Kerala (3,257), Chhattisgarh (3,469), Puducherry (636), Goa (744), Tripura (388), Chandigarh (326), Andaman & Nicobar (62), Himachal Pradesh (955), Ladakh (127), Manipur (364), Nagaland (83), Meghalaya (143), Arunachal Pradesh (56), Sikkim (129), Mizoram (8), and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu (2).
