Patna : India defeated West Indies (WI) by 17 runs in the 3rd T20I at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, West Bengal, on February 20, 2022, late night, to win the three-match series 3-0, in a clean sweep. In fact, it has been a double sweep as India had also won the three-match ODI series 3-0 a few days back.
WI had won the toss and opted to bowl. Batting first first, India had scored 184/5 in 20 overs with Suryakumar Yadav scoring 65 runs in 31 balls hitting 1 four and 7 sixes while Venkatesh Iyer remained unbeaten on 35 in 19 balls hitting 4 fours and 2 sixes. Suryakumar Yadav was named both Player Of The Match and Player Of The Series.
Chasing a target of 185 runs, WI finished at 167/9 in 20 overs as fast medium bowler Harshal Patel took 3/22 in 4 overs while Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar, and Venkatesh Iye,r took two wickets each. Intelligent bowling changes by captain Rohit Sharma and two brilliant catches taken by him clinched the game for India. To the credit of WI, they ran close in all the three-matches of the T20I series.
Nicholas Pooran scored 61 in 47 balls with 8 fours and 1 six, his third successive fifty in the series. He fell to Shardul Thakur. Fast medium bowler Romario Shepherd scored 29 in 21 balls hitting 1 four and 3 sixes including 2 of fast medium bowler Avesh Khan. Rovman Powell scored 25 in 14 balls hitting 2 fours and 2 sixes.
WI captain Kieron Pollard fell to Iyer for 5. Jason Holder also fell to Iyer. Both the WI openers : Kyle Mayers (6) and Shai Hope (8) fell to Deepak Chahar could bowl only 1.5 overs due to injury.
