Patna : Riding on an unbeaten 208 in 153 deliveries by Captain Rohit Sharma, his third double century in the ODI, India defeated Sri Lanka by 141 runs in the second ODI at Punjab Cricket Association Stadium, Mohali, on December 13, 2017, to level the three-match series 1-1. Sri Lanka had won the first ODI by 7 wickets at Dharamsala.

Replying to India’s 392/4, Sri Lanka could score only 251/8 in 50 overs with former Captain Angelo Mathews scoring an unbeaten 111 in 133 balls hitting 9 fours and 3 sixes, his second ODI ton. S Gunaratne made 34 in 30 balls, N Dickwella 22 and L Thirimanne 21. For India, spinner Y Chahal took 3/60 in 10 overs and Jasprit Bumrah 2/43 in 10 overs. Bhuvaneshwar Kumar took 1/40 in 9 overs while Hardik Pandya took 1/39 in 10 overs. Debutant spinner Washington Sundar took 1/65 in 10 overs.

Sri Lanka won the toss but opted to bowl first which proved to be a wong decision as Rohit Sharma, Shreyas Iyer and Shikhar Dhawan pulverised the Sri Lankan bowling attack. India scored 147 runs in the last 10 overs. Rohit Sharma took 115 balls to reach his 16th ODI century but therafter he went beserk and scored his second hundred in only 35 balls. Rohit hit 4 sixes in one over. His wife Ritika was watching Rohit from the stands. It was their third marriage anniversary.

Rohit, also called Rohit Hitman Sharma, hit 12 sixes and 13 fours in his unbeaten 208. He was involved in two big partnership – first a 115 run opening stand with Shikhar Dhawan who scored 68 runs in 67 balls hitting 9 fours, and then a 213 run second wicket with Shreyas Iyer who scored 88 in 70 deliveries hitting 9 fours and 2 sixes. Rohit’s was an awe inspiring batting display making batting look so ridiculously easy.

Rohit had earlier scored 264 against Sri Lanka, his first ODI double century, and then 209 against Australia, a much better bowling side. His 16th ODI century was Rohit’s first as Captain.He had scored only two in the first ODI at Dharamsala. MS Dhoni was out for 7 in 5 balls and Hardik Pandya 8 in five balls.

For  Sri Lanka, T Perera took 3/80 in 8 overs while S Pathirana took 1/63 in 9 overs. Pacer N Pradip gave away 106 runs in 10 overs without taking any wicket. Another paceman Suranga Lakmal, who had taken 4/13 in 10 overs in the first ODI, too went wicketless giving away 71 runs in 8 overs.
