Patna India defeated Sri Lanka (SL) by 38 runs in the 1st T20I at R Premadasa Stadium Colombo, SL, with pacer Bhuvnesgwar Kumar taking 4/22 in 3.3 overs and medium fast bowler deepak Chahar taking 2/24 in 3 overs. Chasing a target of 165 runs, SL were all out for 126 runs in 18.3 overs with Charith Asalanka scoring 44 runs in 26 balls hitting 3 fours and 3 sixes and opener Avishka Fernando scoring 26 in 23 balls with 3 fours. SL captain Dasun Shanaka fell to spinner Varun Chakravarthy for 16 runs. SL had won the toss and opted to bowl. Bhuvneshwar Kumar was declared Player Of The Match.

Batting first, India scored 164/5 in 20 overs with captain Shikhar Dhawan (opener) scoring 46 in 36 balls with 4 fours and 1 six and Suryakumar Yadav scoring 50 in 34 balls with 5 fours and 2 sixes. Ishan Kishan (wk) remained unbeaten on 20 in 14 balls hitting 1 four and 1 six. Sanju Samson fell to spinner Wanindu Hasaranga for 27 in 20 balls with 2 fours and 1 six. Hardik pandya fell to fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera for 10 runs.  Opener Prithwi Shah also to Chameema for zero.
