Patna : India defeated South Africa by 28 runs in the first match of the three-match ODI series at the New Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg, South Africa, on February 18, 2018, to go 1-0 up in the series. Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, who took 5/25 in 4 overs, was declared Player of the Match.

Asked to bat first by South Africa, who won the toss, India made 203/5 in 20 overs riding on an explosive 72 in 39 balls by opener Shikhar Dhawan hitting 10 fours and 2 sixes and an unbeaten 29 in 27 balls by Manish Pandey. Captain Virat Kohli made 26 in 20 balls hitting 2 fours while opener Rohit Sharma made 21 in 9 balls hitting 2 sixes and 2 fours. Suresh Raina made 15 while M S Dhoni was out for 16. Hardik Pandya remained unbeaten on 13 in 7 balls hitting 2 fours. For South Arfica, Junior Dala took 2/47 in 4 overs while Chris Morris, Andile Phehlukwayo, and T Shamsi took one wicket each.

In reply, South could score only 175/9 in 20 overs though opener R Hendrick made a quickfire 70 in 50 balls hitting 8 fours and a six. F Behardien made 39 in 27 balls hitting 3 fours and 2 sixes. South Africa Captain J P Duminy was out 3 while wicketkeeper Heinrick Klaasen made 16.

For India, Bhuvaneshwar Kumar took 5/24 while Jaidev Unadkat, Hardik Pandya and YUzvendra Chahal took one wicket each.
