Patna :  India defeated England by a massive margin of 66 runs in the 1st ODI at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune, on March 23, 2021, night, as debutant medium fast bowler Prasidh Krishna took 4/54 in 8.1 overs while fellow medium fast bowler Shardul Thakur took 3/37 in 6 overs. Pacer Bhuvaneshwar Prasad took 2/30 in 9 overs. A 112 runs unbroken partnership for the 6th wicket between Lokesh Rahul (wk) and debutant all-rounder Krunal Pandya in the last 10 overs had put India in driver’s seat in the match. Shikhar Dhawan was named Player Of The Match for scoring 98 runs.

Chasing a target of 318 runs, England were all out for 251 in 42.1 overs with Jonny Bairstow scoring 94 in 66 bals hitting 6 fours and 7 sixes. Bairstow hit spinner Kuldeep Yadav for 2 sixes. He also hit Krunal Pandya for a six. In fact, England were cruising with opener Jason Roy (46) and Bairstow adding 135 runs for the first wicket. But, Shardul Thakur took the crucial wickets of Bairstow and England captain Eoin Morgan (22), which proved to be game changer. Jos Buttler (wk) also fell to Thakur for 2 runs. All-rounder Ben Stokes fell to Prasidh Krishna for 1. Opener Jason Roy also fell to Prasidh Krishna for 46. Sam Curran fell to Krunal Pandya.

Earlier, Lokesh Rahul remained unbeaten on 62 runs in 43 balls hitting 4 fours and 4 sixes while Krunal Pandya remained 58 not out in 31 balls with 7 fours and 2 sixes. Openers Rohit Sharma (28) and Shikhar Dhawan (98) added 64 runs for the first wicket. Dhawan and captain Virat Kohli (56)  then added 105 runs for the 2nd wicket. Shreyas Iyer scored 6 runs while all-rounder Hardik Pandya scored 1 run. India were 205/5 after 40.3 overs. But, Rahul and Krunal Pandya launched a counter attack in a scientillating display of batting.
