Patna : India beat Australia by 8 runs in the 2nd ODI at Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium, Nagpur, to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match ODI series. Australia needed 11 runs in the 5oth over with two wickets in hand and Marcus Stoinis batting on 52 but all-rounder Vijay Shankar turned the table on the visitors taking two wickets on his first three balls of the over, his second. Vijay first had a dangerous looking Stoinis lbw for 52 on the first ball of the 50th over and on the third ball he bowled Adam Zampa for 2. India won with 3 balls to spare. But, credit to Australia for taking the match to wire. Australia had won the toss but opted to bowl. India captain Virat Kohli was named Player of the match for his match winning 116.
Interestingly, Vijay had given 13 runs in his first over and was taken out of the attack. But, captain Virat Kohli asked him to bowl the last over as Mohammad Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, and Ravindra Jadeja had exhausted their quota of 10 overs. Kohli could have asked Kedar Jadhav to bowl the last over as he had taken 1/33 in 8 overs and had 2 overs left but the captain decided against it.
A flop in the first over, Vijay turned the Hero in the 2nd over taking 2/15 in 1.3 overs. Jasprit Bumrah was as usual excellent in death overs and took two wickets in the 46th overs, his 9th, to bring India back into the game.
Captain and opener Aaron Finch scored 37 in 53 balls with 5 fours and a six while his partner Usman Khawaja scored 38 in 37 balls with 6 fours. Finch fell to Kuldeep Yadav while Khawaja fell to Kedar Jadhav. Shaun Marsh fell to Ravindra Jadeja for 4 while Peter Handscomb was run out for 48. Glen Maxwell fell to Kuldepp Yadav for 4. Wicketkeeper Alex Carey also fell to Kuldeep Yadav for 22. Nathan Coulter-Nile fell to Bumrah for 4. Pat Cummin also fell to Bumrah for duck.
For India, Kuldeep Yadav took 3/54, Bumrah took 2/29, and Vijay Shankar 2/15. Ravindra Jadeja took 1/48 while Kedar Jadhav took 1/33.
Batting first, India were all out for 250 in 48.2 overs with captain Virat Kohli scoring 116 in 120 balls with 10 fours, his 4th ODI ton, while Vijay Shankar scored 46 in 41 balls with 5 fours and a six. Shikhar Dhawan and Ravindra Jadeja scored 21 each while Rohit Sharma was out for duck. Ambati Rayudu made 18 while Kedar Jadhav scored 11. Wicketkeeper M S Doni was out for a duck. Both Kedar Jadhav and Dhoni fell to spinner Adam Zampa on successive balls making it 171/6.
For Australia, fast bowler pat Cummins took 4/29 in 9 overs while Zampa took 2/62 in 10 overs. Nathan Lyon, Nathan Coulter-Nile, and Glen Maxwell took one wicket each.
