Patna : India were all out for a modest 242 in 63 overs in their first innings in 2nd test against New Zealand (NZ) at Hagley Oval, Christchurch, NZ, on Day 1 on February 29, 2020, with opener Prithvi Shaw scoring 54 in 64 balls hitting 8 fours and a six, Cheteswar Pujara scoring 54 in 100 balls with 6 fours, and Hanuma Vihari scoring 55 in 70 balls with 10 fours. Captain Virat Kohli fell lbw to Tim Southee for 3 continuing his miserable run on NZ tour.

India lost their first wicket at 30 when opener Mayank Agarwal fell to Boult for 7. Cheteswar Pujara and Prithvi Shaw then added 50 runs for 2nd wicket. Shaw fell to Jamieson making it 80/2. Kohli fell to Southee soon after making it 85/3. Ajinkya Rahane fell to Southee for 7 and it was 113/4. Pujara and Hanuma Vihari then added 81 runs for the 5th wicket. Vihari fell to Wagner for 55 making it 194/5.

Pujara fell to Jamieson soon after making it 197/6. Rishabh Pant (wk) too fell to Jamieson for 12 with 2 fours and it was 207/7. Fast bowler Umesh Yadav too fell to Jamieson at the same score and it was 207/8.  All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja also fell to Jamieson for 9 making it 216/9. Mohammad Shami fell to Boult for 16 in 12 balls hitting 1 four and 2 sixes. Jasprit Bumrah remained unbeaten on 10 in 11 balls with 1 four.

NZ fast bowler Kyle Jamieson took 5/45 in 14 overs while Tim Southee took 2/38 in 13 overs. Trent Boult took 2/89 in 17 overs while Neil Wagner took 1/29 in 10 overs.

NZ, who  had won the toss but opted to bowl, were 63/0 in 23 overs at stumps on Day 1 with openers Tom Latham and Tom Blundell unbeaten on 27 and 29 runs respectively. This was NZ’s first fifty plus opening partnership in 20 innings in last five series. India bowlers have so far remained economical. NZ trail by 179 runs.
