Australia, who had scored 338 run in their first innings, declared their 2nd innings at 312/6 in 87 overs with Cameron Gree scoring 84 in 132 balls with 8 fours and 4 sixes, Steven Smith scoring 81 in 167 balls with 8 fours and 1 six, and Marnus Labuschagne scoring 73 in 118 balls with 9 fours.

India, who had scored 244 in their first innings, began well again with openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill adding 71 runs for the first wicket. Gill fell to Josh Hazlewood for 31 in 64 balls with 4 fours making it 71/1. Rohit and Gill had added 70 runs in the first innings making it only the second time since 1968 that the Indian openers have added fifty plus runs for the first wicket in both the innings of a test.

Earlier, Australia resuming at their overnight score of 103/2, declared their second innings at 312/6. Smith and Labuschagne added 103 runs for the third wicket. Cameron Green and captain Tim Paine added 104 runs for the 6th wicket. Paine remained unbeaten on 39 in 52 balls with 6 fours.
