Patna : India were 80/3 after 19 overs in the 1st ODI against West Indies (WI) at M A Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on December 15, 2019,  with  Shreyas Iyer batting on 26 with 3 fours and Rishabh Pant (wk) yet to score. Opener Rohit Sharma and Iyer added 55 runs for the 3rd wicket.

WI won the toss but opted to bowl. India lost their first wicket at 21 when opener Lokesh Rahul fell to fast bowler Sheldon Cottrell for 6 in 15 balls with 1 four. Cottrell also claimed the wicket of captain Virat Kohli in the same over, his fourth over. Kohli was bowled by Cottrell for 4 making it 25/2. Opener Rohit Sharma fell to Alzarri Joseph for 36 in 56 balls with 6 fours.
