Patna : India were 28/3 in 11 overs at stumps on day one of the first cricket test against South Africa at Newlands Stadium, Cape Town, South Africa, on January 5, 2018, with Cheteswar Puja batting on 5 and Rohit Sharma yet to score. Like South Africa, India too made a disastrous start to their first innings with Captain Virak Kohli, and openers Shikhar Dhawan and Murli Vijay returning to the pavalion as if in hurry.

For South Africa, Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel and Vernon Philander took one wicket each. Kohli was out for 5 to Morkel while Dhawan was out for 16 to Steyn. Vijay made only one run and was out to Philander. South Africa made 286 in their first innings. India trail by 258 runs. Thirteen wickets fell on the first day of the first test.
