Patna : India were 224/3 after 58 overs on Day 1 in their first innings of the 3rd test against South Africa (SA) at JSCA International Stadium, Ranchi, Jharkhand, on October 19, 2019, when the play was stopped due to bad light in the post-tea session. India won the toss and opted to bat.

Opener Rohit Sharma was unbeaten on 117 in 164 balls with 14 fours and 4 sixes, his 3rd century in the series and 6th overall, while Ajinkya Rahane was batting on 83 in 135 balls with 11 fours and a six. Rohit and Rahane have so far added 185 runs in 256 balls for the 4th wicket in their unbroken partnership. It is the highest4th wicket  partnership against South Africa. Captain Virat Kohli and Rahane had added 178 runs for 4th wicket against SA in the 2nd test at Pune.

For South Africa, fast bowler Kagiso Rabada has taken 2/54 in 14 overs while fellow fast bowler Anrich Nortje has taken 1/50 in 15 overs.
