Hurkacz stuns World No 4 Dominic Thiem in Miami Open

Patna : World No 54 Hubert Hurkacz, 22, Poland, stunned World No 4 and winner of Indian Wells Masters title on March 18, 2019, Dominic Thiem, 25, Austria, in the men’s singles 2nd round of Miami Open at Florida, USA, on March 23, 2019.

Hurkacz beat Thiem, winner of 12 career titles, 6-4, 6-4 in 1 hr 17 minutes in the 2nd round at Hard Rock Stadium, Florida, USA. Hurkacz broke Thiem’s service 4 times in the match while the latter broke his service twice. Hurkacz won 4 games in a row in the match to 3 by Thiem.

Hurkacz’ winning percentage on his first serve was a staggering 87 % to 62% of Thiem. But, Thiem’s winning percentage on his second serve (50%) was slight higher than that of Hurkacz ( 46%). Hurkacz served 3 Aces in the match to 1 by Thiem, who had defeated Roger Federer, 37, Switzerland, in the Indian Wells final.

But, World No 1 Novak Djokovic, 31, Serbia, World No 17 Fabio Fognini, 31, Italy, World No 25 Roberto Bautista Agut, 30, Spain, World No 57 Felix Auger-Aliassime, 18, Canada, and World No 86 Albert Ramos-Vinolas, 31, Spain, have advanced to the 3rd round of the tournament.

Djokovic beat World No 81 Bernard Tomic, 26, Australia, 7-6, 6-2 in 73 minutes in the 2nd round. Djokovic broke Tomic’s service thrice in the match while the latter broke his service just once. Djokovic fired 11 Aces in the match to 9 by Tomic. Djokovic committed 3 double faults in the match to 4 by Tomic. Djokovic’s winning percentage on both his first and second serve (79% & 75%) was much higher than that of Tomic ( 65% & 58%). Djokovic also won 3 games in a row to 2 by Tomic.

Fognini beat World No 80 Guido Andreozzi, 27, Argentina,  5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in the 2nd round. Fognini broke Andreozzi’s service 7 times while the latter broke his service 6 times in the match. Fognini won 4 games in a row in the match to 3 by Andreozzi. Fognini served 3 Aces in the match to 5 fired by Andreozzi. Fognini committed 5 double faults to 6 by Andreozzi.

Agut beat World No 453 Janko Tipsarevic, 34, Serbia, 7-6, 6-4 to enter the 3rd round of the tournament. Both the players won 3 games each in a row in the match. Agut won 3 break points to 2 by Tipsarevic. Both the players served 2 Aces each in the match. Tipsarevic is a former World Top 10 player.

Vinolas beat World No 30 Lucas Pouille, 25, France, in a tough three-set contest 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the 2nd round. Vinolas broke Pouille’s service 4 times in the match while the latter broke his service twice. Vinolas served 4 Aces during the match to 3 by Pouille. Pouille committed 3 double faults to 2 by Vinolas. Vinolas also won 4 games in a row to 2 by Pouille.

Teenage Canadian sensation Aliassime beat World No 36 Marton Fucsovics, 27, Hungary, 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 in the 2nd round firing 6 Aces. Aliassime broke Fucsovics’ service 6 times while the latter broke his service thrice. But, Aliassime also committed 6 double faults to 4 by Fucsovics. Aliassime won 6 games in a row during the match t0 4 by Fucsovics.

World No 65 Robin Haase, 31, Netherlands, has also reached the 3rd round defeating World No 96 Lloyd Harris, 22, South Africa, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the 2nd round. Haase won 5 break points to 4 by Harris. Both the players won 3 games each in a row. Harris fired 6 Aces in the match to 5 by Haase.
