Patna : Third seed and reigning US Open champion Dominic Thiem, 27, Austria, crashed out of the Australian Open (AO) 2021 on February 14, 2021, suffering a humiliating 4th round loss to 18th seed Grigor Dimitrov, 29, Bulgaria, . World No 21 Grigor Dimitrov stunned Dominic Thiem in straight sets 6-4, 6-4, 6-0 in a remarkable performance to enter the quarter-finals of AO 2021.

The Bulgarian won 7 break points during the match to 2 by 2020 Australian Open Finalist Thiem. Dimitrov fired 10 Aces during the match to 2 by the Austrian.The Bulgarian also won 9 games in a row during the match to just 2 by Thiem. Dimitrov, in all, won 104 points in the match 75 by World No 3 Thiem. Dimitrov’s winning percentage both on his first and second serve ( 72 % & 53 %) was much better than that of Thiem’s (53% & 38%).

Dimitrov had upset 15th seed Pablo Carreno Busta, 29, Spain, in 3rd round on February 12, 2021. He had defeated 2014 US Champion Marin Cilic,32,  Croatia, in straight sets in first round on February 8, 2021. Cilic had reached AO final in 2018 and Wimbledon final in 2017.
