Gerasimov stuns Goffin to reach QFs at Open 13 Provence

Patna : World No 72 Egor Gerasimov, 27, Belarus, stunned World No 10 David Goffin, 29, Belgium, in 2nd round to enter the quarter-finals of Open 13 Provence, an ATP Tour 250 indoor hard courts event at Marseille, France, on February 21, 2020.

Gerasimov, who had lost in the final of Tata Open Maharashtra, an ATP Tour 250 event, at Pune, India, on February 9, 2020, upset 3rd seed Goffin 6-4, 7-6 in 1 hr 32 minutes in 2nd round. The Belarussian won 3 break points in the match to 2 by Goffin. The Belgian though fired 9 Aces in the match to 7 by Gerasimov. Both the players committed 3 double faults each. Gerasimov won 7 games in a row in the match to 3 by the Belgian. The Belarussian, in all, won 75 points to 68 by Goffin. Gerasimov will face World No 18 & 7th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime,19, Canada, in QFs on February 22, 2020.

World No 5 & top seed Daniil Medvedev, 24, Russia, and World No 15 Denis Shapovalov, 20, Canada, also reached QFs of the event on February 20, 2020, late night.

Medvedev beat World No 68 Jannik Sinner, 18, Italy, in three-sets 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 in 1hr 19 minutes in 2nd round battling back from one set down. Medvedev won 9 games in a row in the match to 3 by Sinner. He also won 4 break points to 2 by the fast rising Italian. The Russian fired 7 Aces in the match to 1 by Sinner. Medvedev, in all, won 74 points to 51 by the Italian. Medvedev will clash with World No 58 Gilles Simon, 35, France, in QFs at 11.30 pm on February 21, 2020.

Fourth seed Shapovalov beat 2014 US Open Champion & World No 39 Marin Cilic, 31, Croatia, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 in 1hr 59 minutes in 2nd round to enter the QFs. Shapovalov fired 17 Aces in the match to 7 by Cilic. Croatian Cilic committed 5 double faults to 2 by the Canadian. Shapovalov won 3 break points to 1 by Cilic. The Canadian also 3 games in a row to 2 by Cilic. Shapovalov, in all,  won 90 points to 76 by the Croatian. The Canadian will face World No 55 Alexander Bublik, 22, Kazakhstan, in QFs at 7.30 pm on February 21, 2020.
