Patna : Former test opener Gautam Gambhir, 37, who announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on December 4, 2018, joined the BJP on March 22, 2019, in the presence of Union Ministers Arun Jaitley and Ravi Shankar Prasad in Delhi. Gambhir also met BJP President Amit Shah on the day. The BJP may field Gautam Gambhir in the Lok Sabha polls from one of the seats in Delhi.
Gambhir played 58 tests, 147 ODIs, and 37 T20Is in his career. He performed exceedingly well in 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 World Cup, both won by India. Gambhir scored 9 centuries in tests and 11 centuries in ODIs. His highest test score is 206 against Australia in 2008. Gambhir scored 4,154 runs in tests and 5,238 runs in ODIs in his 13 year long international career. He played his last test against England in November 2016. He formed a great opening pair with Virendra Sehvag. He also captained KKR in the IPL.
Jaitley described Gambhir’s joining the party as an important induction into the BJP.
