Gasquet beats Sumit Nagal in 1st round of Hamburg European Championships

Patna : World No 207 Sumit Nagal, 21, India, lost to World No 65 Richard Gasquet, 33, France, in the first round of Hamburg European Championships, an ATP 500 points clay court tournament, on July 23, 2019, at Rothenbaum, Hamburg, Germany. Gasquet, who had reached Wimbledon semi-finals in 2007 & 2015  and US Open semi-finals in 2013, beat qualifier Nagal 6-2, 7-6 to enter the 2nd round. Nagal was making his first appearance in ATP 500 points tournament.

Gasquet fired 8 Aces in the match to 2 by Nagal. Gasquet won 4 break points to 2 by the Indian. Nagal though won 4 games in a row in the match to 3 by Gasquet. Gasquet won 40 service points to 33 by Nagal.

Top seed and World No 4 Dominic Thiem, 25, Austria, defeated World No 47 Pablo Cuevas, 33, Uruguay, 6-3, 7-6 in 1 hr 40 minutes to reach the second round. Thiem won 2 break points in the match to 1 by Cuevas. Thiem, who had reached French Open final in 2018 & 2019, won 49 service points to 45 by Cuevas. The Austrian served 4 Aces in the match to 3 by Cuevas.

World No 16 Nikoloz Basilashvili, 27, Georgia, beat World No 87 Hugo Dellien, 26, Bolivia, 6-4, 6-3 in 67 minutes in the first round. Basilashvili won 5 break points to 2 by Dellien. Both the players served 2 Aces each in the match. He also won 4 games in a row to 2 by Dellien.

World No 36 Jan- Lenard Struff, 29, Germany, advanced to the 2nd round defeating World No 91 Thiago Monteiro, 25, Brazil, 6-1, 6-3 in the first round. Struff fired 10 Aces in the match to 2 by Monteiro. Struff won 5 break points to 1 by Monteiro.

World No 69 Casper Ruud, 20, Norway, defeated  World No 86 Robin Haase, 32,  Netherlands, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 to enter the second round. Ruud won 4 break points to 2 by Haase.
