Motihari : Even as the water level of turbulent Gandak started receding on July 31, 2020, the situation in 250 villages under 15
blocks in East Champaran district has further deteriorated following breach in ring bunds of Burhi Gandak at Mahuawa near
Chakiya and Chitaha under Banjariya block in the district.The flood water has entered around 300 houses after these breaches on July 30, 2020.
According to a press release issued by the Disaster Management Department, the water of Gandak, Burhi Gandak, Bagmati, Lalbakeya,
and its tributaries have already inundated 250 villages affecting a population of 7 lakh in East Champaran District, who is also reeling under COVID-19 pandemic.
Around 62,,000 marooned people were evacuated and nearly40,000 displaced people have taken shelter on the embankments and other safer places under 15 blocks in the district for the last ten days. A total of 90 boats including 8 motorboats and 31 government boats have been pressed into rescue and relief operations. Three teams of NDRF and SDRF have been deployed in different areas and 187 community kitchens are being run by the district administration under three blocks providing food to 40,000 persons daily. Around 300 families have been uprooted in Bhawanipur, Kusawaha tola, and Noneya under Sangrampur block where the left embankment of Gandak was breached last week and 156 houses including pucca ones have been dedtroyed by the current of the river. They have taken shelter on NH28 near Dumariyaghat. On the other hand, patience of displaced and marooned people seems to be running out in the district which is reeling under three rounds of floods. Around 200 flood affected people of Sisawa and adjoining villages under Dumariyaghat police station staged demonstration on NH28 near Dumariya shouting slogans against the government.
Around 400 displaced families have taken shelter on NH28 as their villages have been inundated in Gandak flood. They are
going without food and water. Munna Mahto, Akshay Mahto, and others said no relief was provided by the district administration. Former CPM MLA Ramashray Singh said more than 1.50 lakh people of Sugauli have been affected by the flood.
