Bagaha : Turbulent Gandak is fast eroding Amawa Khas Embankment located on the right bank of the river on Bihar-Uttar Pradesh border. This embankment is located in Kushinagar District in UP and connects to both sides of  Pipara -Piparasi (PP) Embankment in West Champaran District in North Bihar.

PP embankment is maintained by Bihar’s Water Resources Department while the UP Government looks after Amawa Khas Embankment. The situation took an alarming turn on September 23, 2019, with a furious river Gandak eroding some portion of the main embankment.

Ajay Kumar Lallu, MLA from Sewarahi Assembly Constituency in UP, who is on Dharna at Bund site, has accused the UP Government of criminal of negligence in protecting the Bund. SDM, Tamakuhi Raj in Kushinagar  District, Arvind Kumar,  after visiting the Bund said that if it breaches a criminal case will be lodged against Flood Control Division engineers of Kushinagar District.

BJP MP from Deoria in UP Ramakantpati Tripathi visited Amawa Khas Embankment on September 23, 2019, and asked flood protection engineers to protect the Bund. 

Meanwhile, Executive Engineer, Flood Control Division, Kushinagar District,  Bharat Ram, said that embankment protection work is round the clock. He said that water  level of swollen Gandak has stated receding. But, Kushinagar District administration has alerted locals residing near the Bund about the possible danger and asked  them to shift to safer  places.

The officials of Thakaraha and Bhitaha block have also been directed by West Champaran district administration to be ready to meet any eventuality.
