Patna : World No 18 Fabio Fognini, 31, Italy, beat World No 48 Dusan Lajovic, 28, Srrbia, in straight sets in the final to lift the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, Monaco, title on April 21, 2019, night, becoming the first Italian to win an ATP Masters  title. Fognini, who had stunned 11 time champion Rafael Nadal, S;pain, in the semi-finals on April 20, beat Dusan Lajovic 6-3, 6-4 in 1hr 38 minutes.

Fognini, the 13th seed, broke Lajovic’s service 4 times in the match while the latter broke his service twice. Fognini also won 4 games in a row to 2 by Lajovic. The Italian won 41 service points to 32 by Lajovic, who committed 15 unforced errors in the first set. While the winning percentage of both the players on their first serve was 56 %, Fognini’s winning percentage on his second serve was 82 % against Lajovic’s 56 % . Lajovic was playing his first ATP Masters final.

Lajovic had defeated World No 14 Daniil Medvedev, Russia, who had stunned World No 1 Novak Djokovic in the QFs, in the semi-finals on April 20. Lajovic had also defeated World No 5 Dominic Thiem, Austria, in Round of 16. Fognini had defeated World No 3 Alexander Zverev, Germany, in the Round of 16.
