But, reigning US Open Champion and 3rd Dominic Thiem, 27, Austria, beat 2014 US Open Champion Marin Cilic, 32, Croatia, to enter the second round.
Unseeded Mikhail Kukushkin, 32, Kazakhstan, beat Fabio Fognini in four sets 7-5, 3-6, 7-6, 6-0. Kukushkin won 7 break points in the match to 4 by Fognini. He fired 4 Aces to 6 by the Italian. Kukushkin also won 7 games in a row in the match to 3 by Fognini. Kukushkin, in all, won 133 points to 108 by the Italian.
