Patna : Fourteenth seed Fabio Fognini, 33, Italy, and 19th seed Felix Auger Aliassime, 20, Canada, crashed out of the French Open losing their respective first round matches to less fancied opponents at Roland Garros, Paris, France, on September 28, 2020. But, reigning US Open Champion and 3rd Dominic Thiem, 27, Austria, beat 2014 US Open Champion Marin Cilic, 32, Croatia, to enter the second round.

Unseeded Mikhail Kukushkin, 32, Kazakhstan, beat Fabio Fognini in four sets  7-5, 3-6, 7-6, 6-0. Kukushkin won 7 break points in the match to 4 by Fognini. He fired 4 Aces to 6 by the Italian. Kukushkin also won 7 games in a row in the match to 3 by Fognini. Kukushkin, in all, won 133 points to 108 by the Italian.

Yoshihito Nishioka, 25, Japan, stunned Aliassime in straight sets 7-5, 6-3, 6-3 to enter the 2nd round. Nishioka won 6 break points in the match to2 by the Canadian. Aliassime committed 6 double faults to 1 by the Japanese. But, Aliassime fired 5 Aces to just 1 by Nishioka. The Japanese won 108 points in the match to 90 by the Canadian. Nishioka also won 7 games in a row to 2 by the Canadian.

Thiem beat Cilic in straight sets 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 to enter the 2nd round. The Austrian won 6 break points in the match to 2 by the Croatian. He won 93 points to 73 by Cilic. The Austrian won 5 games in a row to 2 by the Croatia.
